Another face from Dreyer's Joan of Arc - the "Freckled Judge". The resolution of the image I was working from was pretty terrible, so I opted for a softer, less crisp look overall than for Joan.

When a member of the jury spits on Joan's face, this judge rises to declare his belief in her and, giving her this indescrible look of pity and admiration, he throws himself down in genuflection at her feet.

Pencil and charcoal.

I love how you draw eyes, with such emotion and depth.

I've watched about half the film so far; it's incredibly engaging. I'm particularly interested in seeing what happens with the man (not sure if he's a judge or not) who tells her he has great sympathy for her, and gets her ring back to her.

Just curious, is there a particular reason for the white space?

Yeah... my nickname for that judge is "Reptile Eyes". I think he is, in fact, secretly the one calling all the shots in the trial. There's a great moment near the end where he's hidden behind a doorway, watching Joan in prayer, and it's like he's so ashamed of himself he's on the verge of tears.

Yes, there is an excellent reason - I uploaded the wrong file. This is how the piece actually looks now, mounted on a plain white square. I wanted it to look like a sort of window - like he's peering out at you, and you're peering into the windows of his eyes in return. Or something.

He does have weird eyes. There's something eerie about him.
